My husband didn’t believe me when I found this, so I had to google a bunch of pictures.  Apparently, hurricane eyes aren’t always circles.  Sometimes they are triangles (Rita, Katrina), squares, pentagons (Isabel, like a starfish!), and even hexagons!  How can what is essentially a giant tornado twirl in a pentagonal shape?  It isn’t, really.  From my cursory overview, it appears there can be strong mini-tornadoes in the eye, and there can be more than one, thus creating the weird polygon in the eye.  These smaller tornadoes are called mesovortices.  If you want to know more, you’ll have to google it…I looked this up over a year ago, and have forgotten some of what I learned!
